Heart of the Community Walk Goes On Rain Or Shine

The Heart of the Community Walk kicked off this morning with the nearly heartbreaking story of Jennifer Scott, who seven hours after giving birth to her triplets suffered heart failure. She survived and so have others thanks to the hard work of doctors and nurses, and she was this year’s honoree for the for the walk, which took place regardless of the weather.

“They say there’s a 30 percent chance of death in my case,” Scott said to the crowd this morning surrounded by her children Ryland, Parker, Kate and her husband Dr. Ryland Scott. “That means there’s a 30 percent chance I wouldn’t have been standing here in the rain this morning on a pickup truck sharing my story.”

Walk organizer and Redmond Regional Medical Center quality analyst P.J. Miller said the Heart of the Community Walk raised an estimated $16,000 this year for the organization.

The organization in the past has in the past provided Automated External Defibrillators to Rome and Floyd County Schools, exercise equipment at Ridge Ferry Park, and added six rooms to the Heart House on Redmond’s campus providing housing for family members of those with heart conditions free of charge.

Michael Obrien In Concert

Posted in The DJ Experience by Michael ~ Leave a Comment

Michael Obrien, former lead singer of the Christian band Newsong, recently visited Calvary Baptist Church to perform at the annual Ladies Christmas Tea on November 7th, 8th, and 9th.

Since Scott Productions has been an active member of the Calvary family since 1997, we decided to light up Obrien in style.

The lighting rig consisted of: a 40 foot span of Applied 12” box trussing, a pair of Mobil-Tech SP2TA crank stands, NSI 6000 & 4600 dimmer packs, 10 x PAR56 cans w/ 300 watt floods, 8 x PAR46 cans w/ 200 watt floods, Lightronics 3216 controller board, and three dedicated 20 amp circuits.

From The Calvary Pastor’s Pen

“… I spoke a word of thanks last week, but I wanted to put in writing my deep appreciation for all those who helped to make last weekend an incredible time of ministry. There are too many to name. Hostesses, servers, dishwashers, drivers, chair stackers, childcare workers, electricians, sound techs, and dancers, all contributed to sowing the seed of God’s Word into the lives of some very special ladies.

I especially appreciate the work of Michael Scott and David Tate who made the special lighting possible. More than creating a “cool stage”, the lighting communicated to the ladies that we were going “all out” to make the evening significant. Almighty God went “all out” for us by sending His Son. Our ministry should reflect appreciation of Christ’s sacrifice by giving our best for His glory. Thanks again to everyone who prayed, gave, and served.”

Dream Comes True For Teen

Make-A-Wish Foundation sets up girl’s Quinceañera

Rome High sophomore Valerie Colon donned the tiara of princess-for-a-day Saturday at her Quinceañera arranged by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Georgia and Alabama.

“I’ve been planning this since I was 13, but it’s better than I ever thought it could be,” said the petite liver-transplant survivor who now is battling kidney disease.

The Quinceañera is a formal celebration of a Latina girl’s 15th birthday — something like a Sweet 16 party or debutante ball — and marks her passage to womanhood.

In one of several rituals that preceded the festivities, Valerie’s parents, Eddie and Nilsa Colon, presented her with an ornately dressed Quinceañera doll.

“A friend brought the doll,” Eddie Colon said. “It stands as the last toy Valerie received as a little girl.”

The event started with a ceremony at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, followed by a reception at Berry College’s Ford Hall.

Guests included friends from Rome and out of state, Valerie’s Atlanta doctor and about 35 relatives — including her great grandmother — who made the trip from Puerto Rico.

“It’s a very emotional thing,” Nilsa Colon said. “We’re so very thankful for what Make-A-Wish Foundation has done for us.”

Shavette Neal, program services director for the Foundation, said Valerie was referred by her social worker at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

After determining the party would be the teen’s dream come true, “wish volunteers” contacted businesses in the community to see if they were willing to chip in.

“It was wonderful,” Neal said.

“The local businesses here just opened up their hearts and their wallets. Top Hat Formal Wear provided all the dresses for Valerie and her court. Scott Productions sent the disc jockey for free,” said Neal.

Berry, Honeymoon Bakery, Paula’s Silver and Gold, Harvest Moon Café, Automax and Shotz Studio also contributed to the event.

Valerie, who was escorted by her cousin Jose Garcia of Puerto Rico, said she’ll never forget her special day. But her favorite memory is one money can’t buy.

“Dancing with my Dad,” she said, her dark eyes outshining the rhinestones around her neck.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes for children with life-threatening medical conditions with the stated goal of “enriching the human experience with hope, strength and joy.”

The Georgia-Alabama chapter has granted more than 3,500 wishes in its 13-year history and is just 50 wishes away from reaching its goal of 400 in 2007.

Neal said help is needed via donations and volunteerism.

Going Digital

Posted in The DJ Experience by Michael ~ Leave a Comment

Finally!

After years and years of the classic compact disc we are almost digital! We have spent countless time researching, reading, and testing different systems & software related to digital DJ’ing.

We had originally purchased PCDJ Red v5.2 years ago with the intention of going digital. Our stopping point was trying to decide on a rackmount computer or laptop. At the time, laptops were still pricey and custom building a rackmount was the best option.

During the summer of 2006 we were proudly selected to “beta test” a brand spanking new digital device designed for DJs. This really sparked our interest again in going digital.

Now days, laptops have become more powerful, have lots of storage, and are now more affordable. So, in the last few months we decided to go digital using a laptop and software solution. We purchase the simple version of PCDJ Blue since the majority of our performances are weddings. It has all the features we need and seems to be simple to use. Ripping our CD library has been the biggest task and is still in process. We have been using AudioGrabber with the LAME encoder compressing to CBR-320.

Our laptop is a great Toshiba Satellite. This model features a 15.4″ diagonal WXGA TruBrite® display; a Pentium® dual-core 1.73GHz processor; 1GB memory; and a 120GB hard drive. We purchased two for backup purposes!

For music storage we are using Western Digital 250GB & 300GB hard drives mounted in external Nexxtech aluminum alloy cases via USB connection. It also has a cool blue LED on the front that shows the hard drive’s activity. The laptop stand is made by Odyssey.

We heard exciting news this past month with the announcement of the Denon DN-HC4500. The DN-HC4500 is a USB MIDI/Audio interface designed exclusively for computer performance DJs. The DN-HC4500 will also interface with our newly aquired Denon DN-X500 mixer.  Life is good! The DN-HC4500 release date is scheduled for the end of September 2007 and we’re on the preorder waiting list!

We’ll write more as we progress in our digital experience.

Wedding Experience Through BOSE

Posted in The DJ Experience by Michael ~ Leave a Comment

In the spring of 2006 we decided to invest into a single BOSE L1 Model I “classic” all-in-one amplification system. BOSE offers a 45-day return policy and we had a wedding scheduled for every single weekend during that 45-day window: a perfect opportunity to test run the system.

Our BOSE L1 system included a single Cylindrical Radiator® loudspeaker. The radiator consists of a line array composed of 24 small drivers mounted into a vertical enclosure for wide, horizontal sound coverage. What this means for our weddings: it projects clean, detailed sound evenly across the room, with little change in tone or volume, not to mention it has a very classy look compared to conventional speakers.

Our system also included a double bass package. The double B1 bass package delivers high output level than the single B1 setup and is more than adequate for our weddings.

Needless to say, we did keep our system with our 2006 calendar concluding with 27 reception performances. Besides receiving consistent compliments on the BOSE sound, it was also a great conversation piece with audio-enthused guests. Did we mention it looks really nice?

Come spring 2007 we have invested in another BOSE L1 double B1 system and the results are incredible. We are extremely pleased with this system and we are very proud to offer it to our wedding clients.

It’s a sexy looking system!
